Voice and tone

How Seeds of Renaissance sounds: the key lines to reuse and examples to copy. Part of the SoR design system. Who we are, why and for whom: brand.md.

The voice in one line

A poet-philosopher who thinks clearly. The lyrical leads, rigour grounds it. We speak from within the moment, not above it. People should feel held, not lectured.

In the brand narrative's words: with kind authority and gentle somatic curiosity, SoR asks the questions you want the answers to. A mutual searching and calm humility lead to the confidence built on rigorous inquiry and study.

The feel is the same as the visual system's: grounded hope. Not doom, not naive optimism; hope that has done the hard thinking.

To a friendSeeds of Renaissance is a project for people who feel like the world's kind of falling apart and are tired of the old ways of thought and governance and want something new, but instead of just doom-scrolling about it, we're trying to figure out and actually practice what comes next.
To a journalistSeeds of Renaissance is a media and movement building project exploring what a wiser, more regenerative civilisation could look like. By combining long-form analysis, practice courses, and community gatherings, we are building a web of like-minded people across the globe ready to help a new paradigm emerge.
To a potential course participantYou already sense something's off with how we're living, whether it be the pace, the disconnection from community, and/or the lack of meaning. We offer a place to actually work through that, not just read about it. You'll leave with practices, not just ideas.

Gardens of Change is about finding the others who already feel this, not joining our journey: don't write "company for the journey".

Rebirth on headlines, renewal in argued prose. Use rebirth on every headline line: the tagline, the media house line, the podcast intro, hero and banner lines. It has a punch renewal doesn't. Renewal stays fine in papers, essays and other explanatory running text. Renaissance belongs to the name and to poetic copy.

The media house line

Exploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds. The line for the podcast, the YouTube banner and the About text. The tagline speaks for the movement; this line is about setting out and exploring, with crisis named alongside rebirth. Use it as it stands until a stronger version replaces it. Options considered: voice-notes.md.

Write it as a ladder: the description first, then cut down to the podcast intro, the banner and the channel line (all in key lines). The description spells out what between worlds means, so the short rungs can stay poetic:

Seeds of Renaissance is a conversation exploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds: why our civilisation is coming apart, and what might emerge in its place. We talk with thinkers, artists and practitioners about making sense of this moment and practising what comes next.

Keep civilisational (the adjective) for the tagline and papers; on short lines worlds, or the noun (our civilisation), carries the scale more lightly.

2 sentencesSomething is ending, and many of us feel it before we can name it. Seeds of Renaissance is a movement of people making sense of this moment and practising what comes next, together.
A paragraphThe 2-sentence version, then: We make a podcast, a printed magazine and essays, and we gather: monthly calls, courses, and gardens of people seeding something where they live.

Principles

  1. Start from the feeling, not the conclusion. Name the sensing first.
    • Do: Something is ending, and you feel it before you can name it.
    • Don't: The metacrisis requires a civilisational paradigm shift.
  2. Lyrical opener, lucid body, clear invitation. One image or line that lands, then plain explanation, then what to do next.
  3. Honest, not hyped. Admit we haven't figured it out. No superlatives, no urgency tricks, no "transform your life".
    • Do: We don't have the answers. We're working them out together.
    • Don't: Join the movement that's changing everything.
  4. Plain words on the way in. Entry pages (home, about, offers, navigation, YouTube titles) avoid insider words. Keep them for the manifesto, magazine and essays, where they can be earned.
  5. Grief and possibility in the same breath. Don't skip the dark to get to the hope; don't stop in the dark either.
    • Do: Like doulas, we witness the last breath of a dying past and the first breath of a future being born.
  6. Concrete over abstract. Say what happens: a call, an hour, a garden, a printed magazine, €35 a year.
    • Do: An hour together, online, once a month.
    • Don't: A transformative space for collective emergence.

Video titles: the guest's name and the idea, in plain words. 40–60 characters. A colon is fine; clickbait isn't. For example (not real episodes): Iain McGilchrist: Attention Is a Moral Act · Dougald Hine on Living at the End of a World · What Is Trying to Be Born? A Talk at Gardens of Change

Thumbnail text: three to six words, taken from the episode itself (a phrase the guest actually says), never a summary or a "you won't believe". It must still read at 168px wide: Attention as a moral act · We are already practising it · What is trying to be born?

Description opener (first two lines show in search):

[Guest] joins Rufus Pollock on the Seeds of Renaissance podcast to talk about [idea in plain words]. [One line on why it matters now.]

Seeds of Renaissance: vision and movement for civilisational rebirth.

What we call people

StageWord
DiscoveryNo label. Newcomers aren't named; we invite: "come explore", "join a call", "take a course"
CommittedCatalyst and pioneer, for the people actually planting the seeds (public documents, the manifesto)

Not seed-bearers (too weak). Do: "Come to a call and explore with us." Don't: "Join 400 explorers." People don't want a box while they are still discovering. The team's internal journey stages are in voice-notes.md.
